On Wednesday 14 January, the Conference of Presidents of the European Parliament’s political groups (CoP) could adopt a declaration on the European Parliament’s “unequivocal support” for Greenland and Denmark, on a proposal from the Chair of the S&D Group, Iratxe García Pérez.
The draft declaration, obtained by Agence Europe and already supported by the EPP, Renew Europe and the Greens, according to one source, “unequivocally” condemns the Trump administration’s statements on Greenland. These statements “constitute a blatant challenge to international law, the principles of the United Nations Charter and the sovereignty and territorial integrity of a NATO ally”, it adds.
Such statements “are unacceptable and have no place in relations between democratic partners”, warns the draft.
The European Parliament calls on the European Commission and the European Council to define “concrete and tangible support” for Greenland and Denmark, “upholding EU principles and law, international law and the NATO Charter”.
