European Commission “takes very seriously” sexual ‘deepfakes’ of minors generated by X’s AI

Since its launch in 2024, Grok, the artificial intelligence of the social network X, has been the subject of controversy. In recent weeks, it has been used by some to generate sexualised images of women, particularly minors, without their consent.

Questioned on Monday 5 January, the European Commission said it was “very concerned” about this abuse. “We’re well aware that it’s not ‘daring’. It’s illegal, it’s revolting, it’s disgusting”, replied Thomas Regnier, spokesman for the institution. “This has no place in Europe”, he added.

Grok came under fire last November, when the Commission said it had sent a notification to X about the anti-Semitic excesses of its AI (see EUROPE 13678/18), which had caused an outcry in Europe.

“X is well aware that we take the rigorous application of the DSA very seriously, and we encourage all companies to comply with it,” Thomas Regnier reminded us, referring to the €120 million fine imposed on the platform on 5 December (see EUROPE 13767/1).

However, the spokesperson did not say whether the Commission intended to take further action against X. (Original version in French by Isalia Stieffatre)
