Cyprus Presidency of EU Council aiming for agreement on ‘grids’ package in late June

The Cyprus Presidency of the EU Council, which began its six-month term on Thursday 1 January 2026, aims to reach an agreement between European ministers on the electricity grids package at the ‘Energy’ Council on 26 June.

This is according to the provisional agenda of forthcoming meetings between European ministers, published on 23 December.

The new Presidency will therefore attempt to achieve a general approach on the legislative elements that make up this new package, presented by the European Commission on 10 December: the revision of the TEN-E regulation on trans-European energy infrastructures and a directive on the acceleration of permit-granting procedures. These texts will first be debated by ministers at the first ‘Energy’ Council of the year, on 16 March.

Cyprus officially presented its political priorities on 21 December, underlining the importance of an integrated European energy network at a time when this island country is still energy-isolated (see EUROPE 13778/4).

The new Presidency also wants to drive forward negotiations on the forthcoming revision of the security of supply architecture for the Energy Union. It could have a progress report on this legislative framework validated at the June Council.

In addition, exchanges of views between ministers are planned in particular on the future ‘Electrification Action Plan’ and the ‘Strategic roadmap for digitalisation and Artificial Intelligence for the energy sector’.
