Michael McGrath presents digital requirements that will shape European justice by 2030 to notaries

To mark the tenth anniversary of the Regulation on international successions and the twentieth anniversary of the European Network of Registers of Wills Association, the Council of the Notariats of the European Union brought together a number of European institutions and practitioners on Tuesday 9 December.

Following the conferences, the Commissioner for Justice, Michael McGrath, who was present at the reception held at the end of the day, set out the priorities of the strategy for digitalising justice by 2030, emphasising that the challenge goes beyond technical modernisation alone and also concerns the operation of Europe’s judicial systems.

The Commissioner reiterated the objective of making “all legislation and case law easily accessible online by 2030”, thanks to common identifiers such as the European legislation identifier and the European case law identifier, which should enable notaries to handle cross-border cases more quickly and securely.

He also argued that access to anonymised judicial data should make it possible to develop new digital tools for legal professionals, without neglecting issues of data protection and system security.

Michael McGrath praised the commitment of notaries to training in EU law and said that the future strategy would require them to master digital tools, manage electronic documents and use secure communication channels.

He also encouraged notariats to take part in the conference to be held on 26 and 27 February under the Cypriot Presidency of the Council of the EU, where the shape of the new strategy will be presented. (Original version in French by Nithya Paquiry)
