EU extends sanctions for serious human rights violations by 1 year

04/12/2025 (Agence Europe)On Thursday 4 December, the Council of the European Union extended by one year, until 8 December 2026, the list of natural and legal persons and organisations subject to restrictive measures for serious human rights violations. These restrictive measures currently apply to 135 individuals and 37 entities. Their assets are frozen and natural and legal persons in the EU are prohibited from providing them with funds, financial assets or economic resources. In addition, a travel ban within the EU applies to individuals on the list. The EU Global Human Rights Sanctions Regime was established on 7 December 2020. On 4 December 2023, the EU Council extended the scheme by three years, until 8 December 2026. Entries on the sanctions list are re-examined every twelve months. (CG)
