On Tuesday 2 December, the European Parliament’s Agriculture Committee approved the provisional agreement reached with the EU Council on the regulation on the cross-border application of the rules against unfair commercial practices.
This compromise was approved by the European Parliament Committee with 47 votes in favour, none against and no abstentions.
On 12 November, EU Council and European Parliament negotiators reached a provisional agreement on the proposal to strengthen the protection of farmers against unfair commercial practices (UCP) by purchasers of agricultural products (see EUROPE 13733/28).
The regulation strengthens the fight against UCP (late payments, unilateral changes to orders, refusal of written purchase contracts), to which farmers and small producers fall victim to buyers and large distribution chains.
The Special Committee on Agriculture (SCA) also approved the text of the agreement at its meeting on Monday 1 December. The European Parliament still has to formally adopt the regulation.
