At their meeting with the European Commissioner for Fisheries, Costas Kadis, the European Social Partners in the sector - ETF, Europêche and Cogeca - pleaded on Thursday 6 November for the maintenance of a specific fund for fisheries in the EU’s Multiannual Financial Framework (MFF) for 2028-2034.
This fund should support fleet modernisation, decarbonisation, generational renewal and improvements to safety, training and working conditions.
The Commissioner confirmed that the results of the current evaluation of the Common Fisheries Policy (CFP) would be published in spring 2026. He also pointed out that the future ‘Vision for fisheries 2040’ will focus on the social dimension, safety and the skills of workers. Mr Kadis stressed the essential role of the Social Dialogue Committee in anchoring the human dimension of fisheries at the heart of European policies.
With regard to the 2026 Total Allowable Catches (TACs), the social partners have warned that drastic quota reductions and area closures are threatening jobs, incomes and the attractiveness of the sector for younger generations - particularly in the Mediterranean.
