21/10/2025 (Agence Europe) – In an open letter published on Monday, 20 October, 2,178 scientists from across Europe have—ahead of the European Council meeting on 23 October—called on EU Member States’ heads of state and government to adopt an ambitious climate target for 2040. They are calling for greenhouse gas emissions in the EU to be reduced at least 90–95% compared to 1990—the only trajectory they believe to be compatible with the Paris Agreement and European climate legislation. Besides being a scientific necessity, the transition reportedly represents a major economic opportunity for the EU, since it brings with it opportunities in terms of competitiveness, innovation, job creation, and energy independence. By being made public, this text furthermore aims to fuel a transparent debate with citizens and the media just prior to the discussions that will determine the European position at COP30.
