The European Parliament has adopted (by 533 votes in favour, 43 against and 68 abstentions) the report by Marketa Gregorová (Greens/EFA, Czech) adapting certain procedural rules relating to the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR).
These additional rules, validated seven years after the GDPR was first implemented, should make it possible to resolve certain problems relating to the retention of personal data, by setting clear deadlines and strengthening the rights of complainants and consumers.
According to the rapporteur, these new deadlines should make it possible to eliminate interminable appeal periods and give citizens more power to manage their data in the face of major digital companies.
The new rules require data protection authorities to resolve simple data retention disputes within 12 months, and complex cases within 15 months. Extensions will only be granted in exceptional cases.
