Euro area payment service providers now required to offer instant transfers

09/10/2025 (Agence Europe) – Payment service providers in the euro area are now legally obliged to offer their customers a service for sending instant payments in euros, as well as a ‘Verification of Payee’ service, said the European Commission on Thursday 9 October. “We will monitor the concrete implementation in Member States so that everyone can fully benefit from these new rules”, warned Maria Albuquerque, European Commissioner for Financial Services. With the adoption in 2024 of the new EU Instant Payments Regulation (see EUROPE 13358/11), service providers were already obliged, from January 2025, to offer their customers the option of receiving instant payments in euros. From January 2027, the new rules will extend to service providers located outside the euro area. (BD)
