In a press release issued by the European External Action Service (EEAS) on Sunday 7 September in Kabul (Afghanistan), the European Union announced an additional €14 million to support Afghan communities and to strengthen support for women and girls, in addition to the commitments it has made in partnership with United Nations agencies.
€6 million of the €14 million forms part of the extension of the ‘Afghanistan Community Resilience Programme’ (ACRP), launched in 2024 by the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) and the International Organization for Migration (IOM). “This additional contribution by the European Union comes at a critical time when Afghan communities struggle with climate hazards and dramatically eroding natural resources” said Veronika Boskovic Pohar, the EU Chargée d'Affaires in Afghanistan.
In addition, €8 million will be allocated to cooperation with UN Women. This sum gives a new total of €23 million that has been mobilised since 2022 for essential services for women and girls, in particular through community centres and support for civil society organisations.
