In a letter sent to European Commissioner for Internal Affairs and Migration Magnus Brunner on Wednesday, 16 July, 26 MEPs—on the initiative of Tineke Strik (Greens/EFA, Dutch)—are calling for the “immediate” resignation of European Coordinator on Combating Antisemitism Katharina von Schnurbein.
According to these MEPs, “Ms von Schnurbein’s reputation has been so gravely compromised”—as has the credibility of the European Commission—by remarks, revealed by EUObserver.com, that the coordinator allegedly made during a meeting with ambassadors from EU countries in Israel, according to which the assessment of Israel’s compliance with the ‘human rights’ clauses in the EU-Israel Association Agreement (see EUROPE 13679/13) was based on “rumours about Jews”.
On X, Ms Strik held the view that by describing the ‘bake sales for Gaza’ organised by EU institutions’ staff as anti-Semitic and suggesting that Hamas was behind the mass protests across Europe, Ms von Schnurbein has “lost all credibility”.
The MEPs who signed the letter want to meet with Mr Brunner to discuss actions to be taken in order to support the fight against antisemitism and all forms of racism.
