20/05/25 (Agence Europe) – On Tuesday 20 May, the European Commission submitted to the Member States a proposal for a decision on a competition cooperation agreement between the European Union and the United Kingdom, the negotiations for which were finalised in October 2024 (see EUROPE 13514/18). As a ‘supplementing agreement’ to the EU-UK Trade and Cooperation Agreement this agreement will establish a framework for cooperation between the Commission, the national competition authorities and the UK Competition and Markets Authority. Significant antitrust and merger investigations will be brought to the attention of both parties and coordinated between the relevant entities. The exchange of confidential information will require the consent of the company concerned. It is up to the Council of the EU to adopt two decisions, one for the signature of the agreement, the other for its conclusion, before the Member States are invited to ratify it.
