31/03/25 (Agence Europe) – In a report published on Monday 31 March, the European Environment Agency (EEA) found that preventive measures to tackle food waste are still inadequate. It points out that in 2022, around 132 kilograms of food waste per person were generated in the EU (59 million tonnes in total). The latest recorded reductions in waste production resulted from the Covid-19 pandemic and policies, “rather than specific waste prevention measures“. The agency notes that the new objectives of the soon-to-be-adopted revision of the framework directive on food and textile waste (see EUROPE 13604/37), could “speed up progress“. Since reducing waste helps to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and land and water consumption, the organization is calling on the EU to better integrate waste into climate measures. (FS)
