European Public Prosecutor’s Office opens administrative inquiry into Bulgarian European prosecutor

28/03/25 (Agence Europe)In a statement issued on Tuesday, 26 March, the European Public Prosecutor’s Office (EPPO) announced it had opened an administrative inquiry into Bulgarian European Prosecutor Teodora Georgieva, who has been temporarily suspended so as to safeguard the integrity of the ongoing investigations. According to our fellow journalists at Euractiv, this decision follows Ms Georgieva’s withdrawal from an investigation into suspected corruption in connection with the gas storage project in Chiren (Bulgaria), which has been funded up to €78 million by European funds. The European prosecutor has asserted that she was threatened by Delyan Peevski—a Bulgarian MP from the Movement for Rights and Freedoms who has, moreover, been sanctioned by the United States and the United Kingdom for corruption—an allegation he denies. The European Parliament, the European Commission, and the EU Council are now responsible for assessing the situation in light of the EPPO’s principle of independence.
