Germany, Italy and Spain lead way in energy storage projects in EU

On Thursday 20 March, the European Commission launched a European energy storage inventory, the first of its kind to present real-time data on all forms of clean energy storage solutions in Europe.

It reveals that Europe’s current total operational capacity is around 66 GW, and that planned projects could double this to 132 GW by 2035.

Germany, Italy and Spain have the largest operational storage facilities among the Member States, with storage capacity in excess of 7 GW each. The United Kingdom leads the way in Europe, with 8.45 GW.

The main operational technology in terms of capacity is pumped hydroelectricity (55 GW). However, future expectations mainly concern electromechanical technology, i.e. batteries, with 37 GW announced, 10 GW permitted and 10 GW under construction.

Currently, 913 storage projects are operational in the EU, 70 have been permitted, 147 are under construction and 601 have been announced.

The database includes a dashboard and interactive map of storage projects identifying all technologies, from battery storage to pumped hydroelectricity, and emerging technologies such as hydrogen and thermal storage.
