Polish Presidency of EU Council prepares policy debate on EU’s energy security architecture

On Wednesday 5 March, the Member States’ representatives to the European Union (Coreper) discussed the EU’s energy security architecture in preparation for the Energy Council on 17 March.

The Polish Presidency of the Council of the EU has pointed out that the revision of the regulations on the security of gas supply and on risk preparedness in the field of electricity is only scheduled for the first half of 2026, but it is already seeking the views of the Member States on the state of progress of these regulations.

The European Commission’s future proposals could include permanent storage-filling measures for Member States, while the regulation on gas storage amended in 2022 has just been extended by two years (see other news).

The Polish Presidency intends to propose a discussion on a broader definition of energy security at the Energy Council in June, according to a document being prepared by Coreper, as seen by Agence Europe.

In the meantime, at the Sector Council meeting on 17 March, it intends to ask the Member States about the specific elements that require in-depth revision in the wake of the energy crisis, as well as the possibility of a future single European legislative act on the security of the gas and electricity markets and possible measures to better protect Europe’s critical energy infrastructures.
