European Court of Human Rights rejects Călin Georgescu’s request against annulment of first round of Romanian presidential elections

21/01/2025 (Agence Europe)On Tuesday 21 January, the European Court of Human Rights announced that it had unanimously rejected the application for interim measures lodged by Romanian far-right candidate Călin Georgescu, who came first in the first round of the presidential elections held last November, but which were annulled by a Supreme Court decision on 6 December, two days before the second round. The Romanian authorities accused the candidate of having benefited from illicit support from the TikTok platform. The application, lodged with the Court on 16 December, was rejected on the grounds that it did not fall within the scope of interim measures, which are strictly limited to imminent risk of “irreparable harm” within the meaning of Rule 39 of the European Convention on Human Rights, which governs such measures. The two rounds of the presidential elections will take place on 4 and 18 May. (VL)
