21/01/25 (Agence Europe) – On Tuesday 21 January, the EU Council adopted a new €60 million support package for the Lebanese Armed Forces (LAF), via the ‘European Peace Facility’ (EPF). This third assistance measure will help to strengthen the capabilities of the LAF to enable them, in accordance with United Nations Security Council Resolution 1701, to redeploy, secure and maintain stability in the South of Litani Sector of the country, the EU Council said in its press release. The assistance measure will also strengthen the operational capabilities and effectiveness of the LAF in contributing to national and regional security and stability, “allowing displaced civilians on both sides to return to their homes”. The EU has already supported the LAF via two EPF measures: one of €6 million on 1 December 2022, and one of €15 million on 23 September 2024. (CG)
