17/01/2025 (Agence Europe) – On Friday 17 January, the European Commission reiterated that this date was the deadline for EU Member States to transpose the electricity market design rules (Directive EU/2024/1711) into national law. These rules, which were the subject of an interinstitutional agreement on 14 December 2023 and came into force on 16 July 2024 (see EUROPE 13454/27), aim to stabilise energy prices for consumers by reducing dependence on fossil fuel costs. According to the Commission, this is “an important step” ahead of the presentation of the Clean Industrial Deal, expected on 26 February (see EUROPE 13558/8). However, so far no Member State has fully transposed the relevant provisions of the Directive. The Commission therefore urges them to do so as soon as possible. (PLD)
