In its 2024 Landscape Report published on Wednesday 8 January, the industry association Bioenergy Europe has identified four critical areas where bioenergy can deliver immediate benefits to meet the EU’s climate goals and contribute to Europe’s economic competitiveness.
According to Bioenergy Europe, the EU should prioritise bio-based carbon removal technologies such as BECCS (bioenergy with carbon capture and storage) to meet decarbonisation targets.
The association is also calling for an acceleration in modernising appliances for sustainable heating, achievable in particular by replacing obsolete appliances with renewable alternatives.
It also recommends ensuring a secure and sustainable biomass supply, and that this be reflected in Europe’s bioeconomy strategy.
Finally, Bioenergy Europe is calling for regulatory stability to attract investment and encourage innovation.
The report also states that bioenergy will account for 54% of Europe’s renewable energy mix by 2022, avoiding 300 million tonnes of CO2 emissions annually.
