18/12/2024 (Agence Europe) – Global coal use is set to reach a new peak in 2024 of 8.77 billion tonnes, according to a new report by the International Energy Agency (IEA) on Wednesday 18 December. While advanced economies such as the US and the EU continue to reduce their use of coal, and the massive deployment of renewable energies will further contribute to this decline in the future, demand from emerging markets, particularly in Asia, is offsetting this decline. Coal continues to play an important role in power generation and industry, particularly in China, which dominates global coal consumption and production. Between now and 2027, demand is set to plateau and emissions are unlikely to fall. International coal trade volumes are also set to reach a record high of 1.55 billion tonnes in 2024.
