On Tuesday 17 December, the European Commission published three new working documents designed to promote sustainable aquaculture in the European Union.
These documents focus on three key issues: access to space and water for freshwater and land-based aquaculture, adaptation to climate change and the energy transition.
The first working document complements the Commission’s previous publication from April 2024 on planning access to space and water for marine aquaculture.
The second aims to help Member States and the aquaculture sector prepare climate change adaptation plans for aquaculture.
The last document describes the main uses of energy in the aquaculture sector and proposes ways of decarbonising them.
The Commission and the EU Aquaculture Assistance Mechanism are currently working on documents related to the environmental performance of aquaculture and fish welfare.
