The political groups that form the basis of the pro-European majority in the European Parliament – EPP, S&D, and Renew Europe – have taken an important step in preparation for an overall political agreement on parliamentary committee reform (see EUROPE 13496/26).
According to our information, the Subcommittee on Security and Defence (SEDE) and the Subcommittee on Public Health (SANT) will become fully-fledged committees. These two bodies’ mandates would be quite progressive.
Also included in these negotiations is the creation of two special parliamentary committees: one on a ‘democratic shield’, which was requested by Renew Europe and which would be responsible for analysing issues related to foreign interference, and the other on ‘housing’ problems.
The mandates of the two special committees still need to be finalised—taking the mandates of existing parliamentary committees into account. According to one negotiator, there is no set timetable for finalising an overall agreement, which will ultimately have to be approved by the European Parliament’s Conference of Presidents (CoP).
