European Commission launches ‘European Board on Agriculture and Food’

On Thursday 5 December, the European Commission adopted a decision (https://aeur.eu/f/eo2 ) setting up the ‘European Board on Agriculture and Food’, as recommended in the report on the results of the Strategic Dialogue on the Future of Agriculture.

This is Christophe Hansen’s first specific act as Commissioner for Food and Agriculture, and he will be chairing this European Board that is devoted to agriculture.

The President of the Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, stated that this European committee will have to “tackle the full complexity of the agri-food value chain, supporting our farmers and driving a more resilient, competitive and sustainable agri-food system(see EUROPE 13475/1)

This High Level Group will provide advice on the follow-up to the results of the Strategic Dialogue and contribute to the European Commission’s work on the Vision for Agriculture and Food (to be adopted within the first 100 days of the mandate).

The board will be set up for a period of five years and is expected to meet between two and six times a year. A call for applications (see https://aeur.eu/f/eo3 ) has been published to form this ‘European Board on Agriculture and Food’.

This group will be made up of a maximum of 30 member organisations representing three categories of stakeholders: the farming community, other players in the food supply chain and civil society, including areas such as the environment, animal welfare and consumers.

Organisations who are applying for membership must be registered in the Transparency Register. The deadline for applications is 8 January 2025. (Original version in French by Lionel Changeur)
