At the European Cancer Summit in Brussels on Wednesday 20 and Thursday 21 November, the European Cancer Organisation presented the results of a survey showing the extent of the crisis in the EU’s healthcare workforce.
In particular, the survey shows that 19% of professionals in the field of cancer treatment suffer from severe burnout, and 52% say that their workload seems endless.
The report identifies 10 key recommendations for immediate action, including the development of a European action plan to tackle shortages of healthcare workers in this sector.
The organisation also suggests making health workforce planning one of the EU’s actions in terms of health emergency preparedness and resilience, monitoring levels of burnout and anxiety among oncology professionals across Europe, and promoting peer support networks for the cancer workforce.
The survey involved more than 700 cancer professionals from 30 countries.
