EU welcomes holding of peaceful and transparent parliamentary elections

18/11/24 (Agence Europe)On Friday 15 November, the European Union welcomed the holding of “peaceful, transparent, competitive and well organised” parliamentary elections in Sri Lanka on 14 November, won by President Anura Kumara Dissanayake’s left-wing coalition. In a statement issued by the European External Action Service (EEAS), the EU said it looked forward to continuing to work with the Sri Lankan government and people “in support of a sustainable economic recovery, inclusive growth and reconciliation” in the country. In the context of these elections, the EU Election Expert Mission assessed technical aspects of the parliamentary electoral process in Sri Lanka. The conclusions of this mission will build on the analysis of the mission deployed between August and October of this year for the presidential elections (see EUROPE 13487/21). The EU then indicated that it would continue to work with the government to support the necessary reforms and to develop trade and investment relations. (PLD)
