20/09/24 (Agence Europe) – On Thursday 19 September, the European Union Election Observation Mission, sent in response to an invitation from the Sri Lankan Electoral Commission, deployed 32 short-term observers to all the electoral constituencies for the presidential election in Sri Lanka. They will be required to observe election day procedures, including the opening of polling stations, the voting and counting of ballots, and the tabulation of results. This deployment follows that of 26 long-term observers who have been monitoring preparations for the elections since 29 August (see EUROPE 13473/13). A full final report will be published once the entire electoral process has been completed. Two days after the election, on 23 September, the Chief Observer, Nacho Sánchez Amor (S&D, Spanish), will present the preliminary results and conclusions of the mission at a press conference in Colombo.
