On Thursday 19 September, the NGO Oceana took the view that there was a lack of transparency in the labelling of seafood products in EU countries.
The Oceana organisation, which investigated seafood products sold in supermarkets in Belgium, France and Spain, has called on the European Commission to require more consumer information on processed seafood.
Labels for products like canned tuna, fish sticks and surimi lack essential information such as species name, area of origin, and method of capture or production.
The authors of the report estimated that for almost 40% of processed seafood products analysed in Belgium, France and Spain, it is impossible to know the species, origin and fishing gear used.
This situation contrasts with the consumer information requirements for fresh seafood entering the EU market.
Oceana is therefore urging the European Commission to revise the regulation on the common market organisation (CMO), in particular to extend its scope to processed fishery products.
