The European Union has released €2.2 million in humanitarian aid to help the people worst affected by Typhoon Yagi, one of the most powerful typhoons to hit the South East Asian region in decades.
This funding will help meet the most urgent needs, such as food, water, sanitation and healthcare.
The largest amount (€1.2 million) is earmarked for humanitarian action in Myanmar, where the storm has hit regions already badly affected by the ongoing armed conflict (see EUROPE 13416/13).
Next, €650,000 will be allocated to Vietnam, €200,000 to the Philippines, where the interaction between Yagi and the south-west monsoon has also caused severe flooding, and €150,000 to Laos.
To date, around 500 people have died, mainly in Vietnam and Myanmar.
To support the emergency response, the EU has also activated the Copernicus emergency satellite mapping service, which has already produced 10 maps. (Original version in French by Pauline Denys)
