On Tuesday 5 November, a number of EU organisations called on the European Commission to revise the texts on tobacco products in order to “accelerate” the implementation of Europe’s Beating Cancer Plan”.
In particular, the European Cancer Organisation, the European Lung Foundation and the European Society of Cardiology want to see a revision of the Tobacco Products Directive, the Tobacco Taxation Directive, the Tobacco Advertising Directive and an overhaul of the legal framework on cross-border tobacco purchases.
These organisations advocate the introduction of excise duties on heated tobacco, e-cigarettes and nicotine pouches, and an increase in the minimum tax rates on cigarettes and fine-cut tobacco. They also advocate a ban on flavourings in heated tobacco products. In addition, disposable e-cigarettes should be banned (Belgium will do this starting 1 January 2025) and the sale of e-cigarettes should be prohibited to young people under the age of 18.
