European Research Council awards grants to 57 teams tackling major scientific challenges

Fifty-seven research groups will receive a total of €571 million from the Horizon Europe programme to tackle some of the most complex scientific problems, across a wide range of disciplines, the European Commission announced on Tuesday 5 November.

European Research Council (ERC) ‘Synergy Grants’ awarded in this context encourage collaboration between outstanding researchers, enabling them to combine their expertise and resources to push the boundaries of scientific discovery.

Iliana Ivanova, Commissioner for Innovation, Research, Culture, Education and Youth, welcomed the fact that researchers from countries with historically fewer ERC grants were among the winners, “reflecting our mission to foster scientific excellence across Europe”. Ensuring that concrete infrastructure is both environmentally friendly and durable, studying the nitrogen cycle of the oceans and its impact on the climate, and looking at how digital technology can help bring communities together are just some of the issues that the new winners in this round of grants will be exploring.
