At the time of the energy crisis, the EU had set itself a binding target of filling gas storage facilities to 90% by1 November, but expectations have been exceeded, with reserves now standing at 95%, as announced by the European Commission on 31 October.
The 90% target was set in the Gas Storage Regulation (EU/2022/1032) of June 2022 to ensure sufficient security of supply and market stability for the winter months.
According to the latest figures published by Gas Infrastructure Europe, 100 billion m³ of gas (1092 TWh) are currently stored in the EU, representing around a third of the EU’s annual gas consumption.
The European Commissioner for Energy welcomed this result, stressing that “this puts us in a strong position to keep supplies and prices stable this winter, and supplies and prices this winter and to continue our transition away from Russian fossil fuel imports”.
