On Friday 25 October, the European Commission proposed to allocate €116 million to Germany and Italy to help them recover from natural disasters.
The aid, which still has to be approved by the European Parliament and the EU Council, comes from the European Union Solidarity Fund, following the severe flooding that hit these countries in May and June 2024.
€112.07 million for Germany (flooding in Bavaria and Baden-Württemberg) and €3.96 million for Italy (flooding in the Valle d’Aosta region). The aid will cover part of the costs, including repairing damaged infrastructure, safeguarding cultural heritage and clean-up operations.
This support follows funding proposed by the Commission in August 2024 to mobilise more than €1 billion to help Italy, Slovenia, Austria, Greece and France recover from recent natural disasters. The proposal was adopted by the European Parliament and the EU Council in October 2024. The Commission is currently preparing the decisions to implement this support of over €1 billion from the Solidarity Fund (see EUROPE 13499/10). (Original version in French by Lionel Changeur)
