25/10/24 (Agence Europe) – Two years after the European Commission published a proposal to update the lists of priority pollutants that should be monitored and regulated in EU waters, the European Environmental Bureau (EEB) said on Tuesday 22 October that the European Union was “slow to act”. The NGO pointed out that the lists of pollutants were last updated in 2013 for surface water and in 2014 for groundwater, despite the obligation “in law” to revise them “every six years”. What’s more, according to the EEB, only a fraction of the more than 500 chemical substances found in European rivers are currently regulated by the EU’s Water Framework Directive. The proposed revision of this Directive agreed to add certain substances of concern, including a group of PFAS, glyphosate and pharmaceutical products. (FS)
