22/10/2024 (Agence Europe) – On Tuesday, 22 October, the European Parliament adopted—each time by a large majority—the position held by the Committee on Budgetary Control (CONT) with regard to its refusal to grant the Council of the European Union discharge for its 2022 spending (see EUROPE 13494/16). This is the fourteenth time in a row that the European Parliament has refused to grant the Council of the EU discharge since 2009. The European Parliament urges the EU Council to resume negotiations as soon as possible and laments that the EU Council has not sent the information requested. Back in April, the European Parliament had postponed its decision on whether to grant the EU Council discharge on account of the institution’s lack of cooperation. The purpose of the annual discharge is to make the European institutions account for how they use the EU budget. See the European Parliament’s opinion: https://aeur.eu/f/dzt (FS)
