European Commission calls on Austria to strengthen its National Energy and Climate Plan

On Friday 18 October, the European Commission published its assessment of Austria’s updated draft National Energy and Climate Plan (NECP), calling on the Member State to step up its ambitions in order to meet the EU’s 2030 climate and energy objectives.

Austria plans to achieve a 46% share of renewable energies in its energy mix by 2030, exceeding the EU target of 42.5%.

However, the Commission is asking for clarification on the policies that will support this objective, particularly with regard to the deployment of infrastructures and the integration of electricity networks.

In terms of reducing greenhouse gas emissions, Austria is aiming for a 48% reduction in sectors outside the Emissions Trading System, such as transport and agriculture. Although this target is in line with European requirements, the Commission is calling for more ambitious action and a stronger legislative framework to ensure that these reductions are achieved.

In terms of energy efficiency, there are still shortcomings, particularly in the measures aimed at reducing primary and final energy consumption by between 39% and 41%. Further efforts are needed, particularly in building renovation and industrial efficiency.

Finally, the Commission is encouraging Austria to strengthen energy security and protect consumers against price fluctuations by better integrating renewable energies and diversifying energy sources.

To date, 14 final NECPs have been submitted. The Commission reiterates its call to the Member States to submit the missing plans and step up their efforts to achieve the energy transition.
