18/10/2024 (Agence Europe) – On Friday 18 October, three days before the second plenary session of the month, the Greens/EFA group in the European Parliament reiterated that it did not support the European Commission’s proposal (see EUROPE 13495/1) to postpone by one year the entry into force of the regulation on deforestation. A vote on the urgency procedure could be held on Wednesday 23 October, while the vote on the European Parliament’s final proposal (and its amendments) is scheduled for Thursday 14 November. For its part, the EU Council has already aligned its position with that proposed by the Commission on Wednesday 16 October (see EUROPE 13505/13). Postponing the regulation could, according to the Greens/EFA, “lead to the deforestation of an area 14 times the size of Paris, releasing carbon emissions equivalent to 188 million long-haul flights”.
