On Friday 18 October, the Energy Storage Coalition called on the European Commission to draw up an action plan specifically dedicated to energy storage, so that it can “fulfil its crucially needed role in Europe’s energy transition”.
“Along with grid expansion and optimisation, the EU’s ambition depends on expanding energy storage capacity to meet increasing flexibility demands and to lower electricity prices”, says the Coalition.
In its view, the requested action plan should include a number of elements, such as specific incentives for energy storage, harmonisation of authorisation and grid connection rules for the deployment of storage, and the establishment of a fair framework for charges and levies on the grid.
In addition, the plan should prioritise energy storage in capacity markets and launch specific auctions for energy storage and flexibility solutions, as well as monitor the growth of energy storage in national energy and climate plans (see EUROPE 13464/5).
