Christian Democrats in European Parliament ask Josep Borrell to recognise Edmundo González as legitimate Venezuelan president

17/10/2024 (Agence Europe)Based on a recent European Parliament resolution that was adopted on the Christian Democrat, conservative, and far-right groups’ initiative (see EUROPE 13486/8), 36 MEPs from the EPP Group sent High Representative of the Union for Foreign Affairs Josep Borrell a letter on Wednesday, 16 October, in which they call for him to “recognis[e] Edmundo González Urrutia as the legitimate president-elect of Venezuela”. In their view, after Mr Borrell indicated that the candidate representing the opposition had defeated Nicolás Maduro in the 28 July presidential elections, recognising Mr González as the legitimate president is the next “logical and necessary” step to take. The Venezuelan political opposition is one of the finalists for the 2024 ‘Sakharov Prize for Freedom of Thought(see other news). See the EPP Group’s letter: https://aeur.eu/f/dxq (MB)
