07/10/2024 (Agence Europe) – On Monday 7 October, the European Commission announced that it had added ‘Lorraine’ wines to the Community register of protected geographical indications (PGIs). The ‘Lorraine’ PGI is reserved for quality sparkling white, rosé and red wines produced in the north-east of France, in the departments of Meurthe-et-Moselle, Meuse and Moselle. Most of the grape varieties come from the region, and the wines have many fine bubbles and a lively, fresh profile, with a lingering finish thanks to the grape varieties used. The know-how of winegrowers in the art of vinifying these grape varieties on their own or in blends and mastering the second fermentation in the bottle has an impact on the organoleptic identity of the wines. This new indication will join the list of 3,630 agricultural products already protected at EU level. (LC)
