EU activates its civil protection mechanism in Bosnia-Herzegovina and Lebanon

On Sunday 6 October, the European Union activated its Civil Protection Mechanism in response to flooding in Bosnia-Herzegovina. EU search and rescue teams have been deployed and emergency supplies have also been sent to help first responders on the ground in the face of flooding and landslides.

Croatia, Slovenia, Montenegro and Serbia have sent teams to search for and rescue missing persons. These teams are also involved in removing debris.

Emergency supplies, such as shelters, have arrived from Albania, Hungary, Montenegro, Romania and Turkey. Satellite images from the Copernicus system were provided to local authorities to help them assess the damage caused.

The Civil Protection Mechanism has also been triggered in Lebanon, said the Commissioner for Crisis Management, Janez Lenarčič, on the X social network on Sunday. It will help coordinate the safe departure of EU citizens from Beirut. Flights offered by the Netherlands, Italy and Croatia had transported 665 people as of 6 October, said Janez Lenarčič. (Original version in French by Florent Servia)
