European Commission consults on wine-making practices for de-alcoholised organic wine

The European Commission has opened a public consultation until 20 September on a draft delegated act aimed at authorising certain wine-making practices for the production of de-alcoholised organic wine.

The Commission justifies this text by the fact that since de-alcoholised wine was legally recognised as a wine product in 2021, new wine-making practices have been authorised, but only for conventional (non-organic) production.

The Commission would therefore like to include partial vacuum evaporation techniques among the practices authorised in organic farming, exclusively for the production of totally de-alcoholised wine, provided that the limitations in terms of temperature (75°C) and filtration pores (no smaller than 0.2 micrometres) are respected. Final adoption of the act is scheduled for the fourth quarter of 2024.

The Commission argues that, to help the EU achieve its target of 25% of agricultural land devoted to organic farming by 2030, some of these practices must now be authorised, under specific conditions, for the production of de-alcoholised organic wine.
