Josep Borrell once again calls for provision of more air defence

On the evening of Monday 26 August, the High Representative of the Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, Josep Borrell, called for more air defence to be sent to Ukraine, which is facing massive Russian attacks targeting civilian infrastructure, including hydroelectric power stations, in 15 Ukrainian regions.

According to Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, more than 100 missiles and around 100 drones were fired by Russia, killing at least four people.

Ukraine needs air defence now. I will discuss this with (Ukrainian Foreign Minister) Dmytro Kuleba and EU foreign ministers at the informal meeting of the Foreign Affairs Council on Thursday” 29 August, promised Mr Borrell on X.

The High Representative also reiterated his request to lift restrictions on the use of capabilities against the Russian army involved in the aggression against Ukraine, in accordance with international law. In his view, this would “strengthen Ukrainian self-defence, save lives and reduce destruction in Ukraine”. (Original version in French by Camille-Cerise Gessant)
