Council of European Union ratifies an amendment to EU-Mauritania fisheries protocol

On Monday 22 July, the Council of the European Union adopted, without debate, a regulation published in the Official Journal of the EU amending Regulation 2021/206 on the allocation of fishing opportunities under the Sustainable Fisheries Partnership Agreement between the European Union and the Islamic Republic of Mauritania (Fisheries Protocol 2021-2026).

The changes are technical in nature and involve a change in quotas for category 1 vessels fishing for crustaceans other than spiny lobster: Spain 4,150 tonnes, Italy 600 tonnes and Portugal 250 tonnes. Under this category, a maximum of eighteen ships can be deployed at any one time in Mauritanian waters.

The European Commission’s proposal to this effect dates from 18 June (see EUROPE 13434/11). The aim of the proposal was to increase the maximum number of vessels that can be deployed in Mauritanian waters at any one time from 15 to 18 in category 1. Its application is retroactive (from 8 December 2023).
