On Thursday 25 July, the European Commission announced that it had decided to send a letter of formal notice to Denmark, the Netherlands, Slovenia and Finland for failing to transpose into their national legislation Directive (EU) 2024/242 amending Directive 2009/43/EC as regards updating the list of defence-related products.
The Transfers Directive covers the terms and conditions for the transfer of defence-related products within the EU. The Annex to the Directive defines the scope of the products to which the Directive applies and reflects the Common Military List of the European Union, the European Commission said in a press release.
Member States had until 31 May 2024 to transpose Directive 2024/242. As Denmark, the Netherlands, Slovenia and Finland had not notified national transposition measures within the deadline set, the Commission sent them letters of formal notice. These countries now have 2 months to respond and remedy the shortcomings reported. In the absence of a satisfactory response, the Commission may decide to issue a reasoned opinion.
