Compared with the 2023 marketing year, the harvest forecasts of the EU’s agricultural organisations and cooperatives (Copa-Cogeca), published on Wednesday 10 July, show a 4.7% fall in European cereals production in 2024.
Production is estimated at 257.3 million tonnes (Mt) of cereals, “well below” the average for European cereal production over the last five years (-8.4%), according to Copa-Cogeca, which is expecting a fall in wheat (-6.3%) and barley (-9%) production.
Maize production is set to remain stable (-0.5%), while oat production is set to rise (+21.2%). Sharp falls in cereal production are expected in Poland (-3 Mt) and France (-9 Mt), which will not be offset by the expected increase in Spain (+3 Mt).
As far as oilseed crops are concerned, forecasts indicate a slight decrease compared with 2023 (-1%), but still up on the average for the last five years (+6.3%). Finally, for protein crops, a 13% increase in production is expected in 2024 compared to 2023. (Original version in French by Lionel Changeur)
