Renew Europe Group in European Parliament presents final version of priorities for 2024-2029 legislative period

On Friday 12 July, the Renew Europe parliamentary group finished drafting its priorities for the President of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, who is standing for re-election by the European Parliament on 18 July (see EUROPE 13450/7).

Divided into four priority areas, the document focuses first and foremost on the fight to promote democracy, the rule of law and the Union’s values.

In particular, the group calls for progress on the ongoing cases against Hungary, including under Article 7 of the EU Treaty (see EUROPE 13451/25), and for the launch of a convention for the revision of the Treaties, including the abolition of vetoes and the European Parliament’s right to initiative.

The second priority, initially presented as number one in a provisional document (see EUROPE 13446/6), is European security and defence, with the group calling in particular for an increase in the European Defence Fund and the mobilisation of €100 billion for joint procurement and development.

Renew Europe then calls for the promotion of European competitiveness and the pursuit of the objectives of the European Green Deal, while protecting the agricultural sector and citizens.
