05/07/24 (Agence Europe) – On Friday 5 July, the European Union welcomed the announcement of a humanitarian truce in the Eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC). The EU hopes that this humanitarian truce “will lead to a permanent ceasefire and allow to build a sustainable political solution in the context of Luanda and Nairobi processes”. The dramatic humanitarian situation in the region emphasises the urgent need for an immediate end to the violence, say the Europeans, calling for action to “demobilise all armed groups and end any support to these groups, as stipulated in the EU statement of 4 March 2024”. The EU praises efforts made by the United States to obtain this humanitarian truce and welcomes the commitment made by both the DRC and Rwanda in this regard (see EUROPE 13436/43). (LC)
