05/07/24 (Agence Europe) – On Friday 5 July, the European Commission took note of the decision by Mastercard and Visa to voluntarily continue until November 2029 their April 2019 commitments to reduce multilateral interchange fees (MIFs) by around 40% on payments made in the European Economic Area (EEA) using consumer cards issued outside the EEA (see EUROPE 12244/2). The following ceilings will continue to apply: 0.3% of the transaction value for all physical credit card payments; 0.2% of the transaction value for all physical debit card payments. For online payments, MIFs will be capped at 1.5% for credit cards and 1.15% for debit cards. The EU institution considers that these ceilings remain appropriate. (MB)
